About the role
The System Architect owns the overall architecture of our hardware and software systems, ensuring it remains aligned, scalable, and clearly understood across teams. This role drives key architectural decisions, evaluates technical trade-offs, and recommends solutions that support Gideon’s long-term growth.
The focus is on high-level architectural direction rather than implementation details, which remain with individual teams.
As Gideon continues to scale, we need someone with strong technical judgment, a clear point of view, and a scalability mindset — someone who values feedback, considers different perspectives, and drives well-informed decisions across teams.
Responsibilities we’ll trust you with:
Own & visualize the architecture — keep a single, current, shared high-level view of the end-to-end system across hardware and software.
Analyze, prototype and propose — compare realistic architectural approaches and their trade-offs, build quick prototypes with agentic AI where it helps, and put forward clear options.
Align on the Tech Forum — bring your proposals to the Tech Forum and drive them to clear, documented conclusions (architecture decision records).
Architect new features — recommend which frameworks, solutions and patterns to use, and where a feature should live in the system, before the build starts.
Simplify and harden the system — remove interfaces that don't bring value, cut accidental complexity, and design for graceful degradation, fault recovery and sound real-time behaviour.
Keep the stack platform-agnostic — so new vehicles and partner platforms plug in without forking the stack.
Systems engineering & documentation — define the interfaces and contracts between teams and with customer systems and standards (vehicle interoperability, WMS, conveyors, dock doors, other infrastructure).
Look ahead — stay current with the robotics, middleware and AI-tooling landscape and flag technical risk and debt early.
Your area of expertise:
Substantial experience architecting complex systems that span both hardware and software, including at least one significant migration led end to end.
Genuine breadth across the layers — mechanical, electrical, embedded and control, as well as autonomy, perception, navigation and fleet software.
A strong analytical habit: able to lay out several viable approaches, compare them honestly, and recommend one.
A bias for simplicity and comfort using agentic AI to prototype options, while clear-eyed about its limits.
Systems-engineering rigor and fluency with architecture modelling (e.g. C4, UML/SysML, or diagrams-as-code).
Strong facilitation and written communication; able to lead through influence rather than authority.
Highly receptive to feedback: you actively take on other people’s perspectives, look at the full picture and bring it together into the best possible decision.
A scaling lens alongside the technical one: you judge every architectural choice by how it will hold up as our fleet, product and teams grow.
Bonus points:
Robotics / AMR domain experience, ROS, cloud & fleet software, or functional-safety background.
Experience introducing lightweight architecture governance in a fast-scaling organization.
