About The Role
We're seeking a Software Engineer for Robot Autonomy to join our team and work at the heart of Gideon's autonomy stack - from high-level mission execution and decision-making down to motion planning, control, and fleet coordination.
You'll work across the full autonomy pipeline: interpreting a mission, deciding how to execute it, planning a feasible path, controlling the vehicle along that path, and coordinating with the rest of the fleet - all while keeping the robot safe and robust in real customer environments.
You don't need deep expertise in every area on day one; we're looking for strong software fundamentals, real strength in decision-making systems and/or motion planning, and genuine appetite to grow into the rest.
Responsibilities we’ll trust you with:
- develop and maintain the central decision-making module that coordinates hardware and software inputs to execute robot missions as fast and robustly as possible
- maintain the state-interpretation layer that infers robot/system state from sensor and hardware data
- build and maintain simulation models and digital twins for new vehicles, supporting development and testing across teams
- develop path and motion planning algorithms, computing trajectories and control so the robot reliably and safely follows its planned path
- build coordination algorithms enabling multiple robots to work together toward individual and collective goals, avoiding collisions and deadlocks
- analyze logs and robot behavior to diagnose issues across the autonomy stack; write clean, tested, reviewable code
- travel - there are opportunities to visit our deployment sites in USA and Canada
Our Tech Stack:
- core languages: C++, Python
- robotics framework: ROS
- interfaces & data: REST APIs, SQL/databases
- simulation: in-house simulation environment and vehicle digital twins
- tools & platforms: Linux, Docker, CMake, Bash, Git
Your area of expertise:
- 2+ years of experience with in C++ and/or Python
- Education: BSc or MSc in Computer Science, Informatics, Mathematics, or a related field
- solid software engineering fundamentals - data structures, algorithms, software design
- familiarity with relational and/or document databases
- comfort working in Linux, Docker and Git
- ability to reason about a real-time, safety-critical system running on physical robots
- proficiency using AI-assisted development tools, with a willingness to keep learning new ones
- excellent communication skills in English and a drive for innovation
Bonus points:
- work experience in robotics software and environments, including ROS, Gazebo, etc.
- practical experience with sensors such as camera, Lidar and other autonomy-enabling systems
- experience building simulation environments or digital twins
- experience with real-time control systems or safety-critical software
